VERMON relies on TOPSOLID to design and manufacture high-precision ultrasonic transducers

Founded in 1984 in Tours (France), VERMON is a leading player in the design and custom manufacturing of ultrasonic transducers, also known as ultrasonic probes. Their products, recognized for their performance and reliability, are designed for medical applications (ultrasound, 3D imaging, 2D arrays) and industrial applications (non-destructive testing, multi-element inspection) in demanding environments such as aerospace, nuclear power, and petrochemicals.

With more than 380 employees across France and the United States, the company manages the entire development process, from design to manufacturing. Its expertise is based on advanced technologies such as piezocomposites, single crystals, and CMUT transducers. For nearly 30 years, TOPSOLID has been meeting these industrial demands.

From CAD to Advanced 3D: The Early Days of Modeling at VERMON

In the 1990s, the company was still relying on drawing boards and Rotring pens, which were soon supplemented by the first versions of Topcad (the predecessor to TopSolid), a CAD tool accessible on PCs. This technological choice allowed the company to avoid investing in costly and complex UNIX workstations, while laying the groundwork for a digital transition.
 

As design requirements evolved—particularly in plastics manufacturing for probe housings—VERMON sought a 3D solid and surface CAD solution powerful enough to model complex components, while remaining interoperable with existing versions and compatible with infrastructure constraints.

Why TopSolid Was Chosen

The transition to TopSolid occurred naturally as the software evolved from version V4 to V7, driven by one key factor: the ability to continue using the thousands of drawings created since the company first started using Topcad.

The reasons for choosing TopSolid boil down to four key criteria:

  • Advanced modeling, essential for designing complex plastic parts.
  • Simple integration that does not require a heavy infrastructure.
  • Flexible configuration that can evolve according to internal needs.

VERMON currently uses TopSolid V7.19.400.168, which is deployed to about 30 regular users: engineers and technicians in the mechanical design department. The teams particularly appreciate the exact geometric modeler, which ensures model accuracy, as well as the integrated PDM, which has become essential for managing versions, securing data, and facilitating collaboration.

A Foundational and Long-Term Partnership

TopSolid has become a cornerstone tool for design projects at VERMON. With the support of TopSolid’s sales teams, dedicated training programs have been implemented to assist new hires with onboarding. Today, the database of created models numbers in the tens of thousands, reflecting the depth and stability of the CAD environment.
As part of this structuring effort, VERMON also relies on internal rules for modeling and data management, formalized in a best-practices charter intended for the engineering teams.

Among these rules, the import of STEP files is given special attention. When integrating external data, the teams prioritize creating part-level documents rather than assembly-level ones, in order to limit file sizes and maintain the system’s overall performance.

This approach helps control the volume of data in the PDM system, while ensuring fast and reliable use of the imported models in design projects.
