A strategic union between the software developers Alma and Missler Software

Alma and Missler Software, two leading French CAD/CAM software developers on their respective...

Alma and Missler Software, two leading French CAD/CAM software developers on their respective markets, are combining their activities through a minority investment by Alma in the capital of FMS, Missler Software’s holding company. This operation should in time lead to the merger of the two companies, their products and their distribution networks.
This union should enable the AlmaMissler*Group to offer a wider and integrated CAD/CAM/ERP product line, to reach the critical size needed to accelerate international growth as well as releasing resources to finance Research & Development.
Several actions are already planned and will be launched before summer 2012 to achieve the future union between the two companies. They concern French and international sales as well as future product development strategies.
*the new signature Alma and Missler will use for joint actions and projects.

The objectives of the union

Offer a wider and integrated product line

The complementary nature of the Alma and TopSolid product lines will enable the AlmaMissler Group offer a completely integrated CAD/CAM/ERP solution for the mechanical engineering, tool making, machining, sheetmetal, mechanical welding, wood and robotics sectors.

Be an international leader

In an economic context marked by the consolidation of software developers, only companies of a certain critical size can hope to successfully develop and innovate on international markets where today’s industrial growth can be found. The union of the two companies results in a group of 300 people – 600 when including affiliated entities and major resellers. This group now becomes a leader in France and is already present in more than 20 countries around the world through its branches and resellers.

Pool ressources

Significant savings (pooling of components, developments, distribution costs, etc.) resulting from the union will permit the Group to increase resources for Research & Development, innovation and development of new markets.

An industrial project

The union of two French software developers

The union of Alma and Missler Software should enable the consolidation into a single software company capable of competing with major international CAD/CAM leaders in terms of international presence and product line offered. Alma and Missler Software already have a strong international presence (approximately 60% of their respective licenses are sold outside of France) – their union will enable them to consolidate this presence (synergy of offers and resources) and to target new markets. The new entity will continue to keep its “French touch” with a “Made in France” strategy for its manufacturing software solutions.

Build an independent group

The union between the two companies is not a financial project; this project also aims to develop and extend the life of a strong product line, reinforce investments and ensure the well-being and high motivation of its employees. This union has an economic, human and cooperative dimension that will guarantee the independence of the AlmaMissler Group and the will to continue developing software in France.

A win-win union

Thanks to the minimum overlap between the 2 product lines and a somewhat positive economic context following the recent global financial crisis, there were will no job losses.

The next steps

Alma and Missler Software forsee an initial period of 18 to 24 months during which both companies will materialize the union and will work closely together. The principal axes to focus on are:

Product development

Application gateways between TopSolid (CAD) and Alma (CAM) as a first step.

Development plan for the future CAM Sheet Metal product.

Analysis of possible synergies in robotics

Analysis of the development plan for the wood CAD/CAM solution

Identification and pooling of components (Sheet metal unfolding, nesting, robotic algorithms, CAD modeler, etc.).

French Sales

Both companies will sell each other’s product lines (robotics, CAD, ERP, etc.)

For Sheet metal the progressive convergence towards a CAM solution developed together by both companies

Sale of TopSolid’Design by Alma for all CAD needs

Joint participation on trade fairs and other sales events.

Export Sales

Introduction of the Alma product line to Missler Software resellers and vice versa with the objective to create a maximum of local distribution agreements in particular in Brazil, Italy, Germany, Japan and Korea.

Joint reflection on how to address new markets.

Cultural union

Presence of a member of each company at respective Board Management Committees

Match profiles of each company (developers, sales, marketing, etc.).

Sharing of premises (China, Grenoble, etc.).

About Alma

Known for over 30 years for its expertise in automatic nesting of complex shapes for cutting, Alma is a leading company in the field of CAD/CAM software for sheet-metal working, cutting and robotics. While developing applicative software, Alma also sells its algorithms in the form of software components.
Interview with Christian Arber on TopSolid'Cam 7

Why have you developed a 7th generation of TopSolid?
The development of TopSolid’Cam 7 began 6...

Why have you developed a 7th generation of TopSolid?

The development of TopSolid’Cam 7 began 6 years ago. Our main motivation behind the development of this generation was to be able to offer a completely rewritten and new software to our users. TopSolid as we currently know it (version 6) has been around since the 1990’s. Our aim with TopSolid 7 is to be the first CAD/CAM software on the market to launch a product line that is completely up-to-date with the technological advances of the 21st century and to offer our customers a future with a new, rewritten software.

Does TopSolid 7 have the same philosophy as version 6?

Yes of course… Missler Software continues to offer a completely integrated CAD/CAM/ERP solution for our customers. We offer tailor-made, integrated solutions for the mechanical engineering, sheetmetal and wood industries. These have and will continue to be the main differentiating points of TopSolid with the competition.

Can you summarize TopSolid’Cam 7 in 3 key points?

I will try but it’s not easy… I would have to insist on PDM, user-interface and performance.

Firstly with TopSolid’Cam 7 the user is not only working with a geometrcial software but also a solution that has an integrated database. This enables TopSolid’Cam 7 users to easily manage their tools, machines and toolpaths. All drafts and BOMs can be directly consulted within the software by the R&D Department. The end result is significant time gains for the user who can manage all technical data easily and transparently with TopSolid’Cam 7.

TopSolid’Cam 7 is without a doubt a very user-friendly solution that enables users to be operational very quickly (The software has progressed enormously in terms of user interface compared to version 6). We have developed a software which we believe to be the closest possible to customer needs and is better adapted to modern day CAD/CAM software use. (TopSolid’Cam 7 is native Windows 7).

Today’s industrial reality shows us that companies produce increasingly complex parts and machines are increasingly sophisticated. Our aim is to provide a CAM software that can manage all these technological advances while offering increased performances for users. TopSolid’Cam 7 easily manages large assemblies and the most complex machines in record times.

What is Missler Software’s commercial strategy for TopSolid’Cam 7? Is it the same for France as for the export market?

TopSolid’Cam 7 has been available for sale in France since the middle of 2011, in fact we already have about 50 customers. At the moment we are mainly targeting new companies with somewhat « regular » needs; for complex mill turn machining we are waiting for TopSolid’Cam 7.7 which will be ready at the end of 2012. In this version we hope to attain the version 6 level of functions. Throughout this transition period we insist on the new interface and increased performances to attract new customers. Our GOelan customers will progressively migrate to TopSolid’Cam 7 in 2012 offering thus a more modern product that offers full CAD/CAM integration for GOelan users.
In fact France is our test market for TopSolid’Cam 7. For this reason we are somewhat “timid” with this product internationally. We do have some TopSolid’Cam 7 customers in the USA and Italy (we cannot stop the enthusiasm of some of our resellers for this new product generation!) but the real launch will happen from September 2012 onwards.

How can you imagine the cohabitation of the 2 TopSolid generations?

In 2012 we will continue to develop and improve the 2 generations of TopSolid’Cam with new functions in TopSolid’Cam 2012 (version 6) because at the moment TopSolid’Cam 7 has not yet reached the level of functionality of version 6.
In the longer term version 6 will continue to evolve but not very significantly as we will be concentrating all our efforts on TopSolid’Cam 7. At the moment 90% of our technical after-sales support teams work on version 6 and only 10% on TopSolid’Cam 7. Over the coming 4 to 5 years this tendency should be inversed.
What will be the next TopSolid 7th generation product to be developed?
It’s hard to say as the decision depends on several factors. We started the development of the 7th generation for the mechanical engineering sector for milling and turning (and soon for swiss turning) to manage design, manufacturing and data management. The logical order to follow would be toolmaking with TopSolid’Mold, TopSolid’Electrode and TopSolid’Progress. We will then finish the product range with TopSolid’Wood for the wood industry and TopSolid’SheetMetal for the sheetmetal industry.
I would like to finish by saying that Missler Software is for the moment the only CAD/CAM developer to have completely rewritten its CAD/CAM product line. Such an R&D project seemed absolutely necessary for us in order to answer evolving customer needs. By offering a simple-to-use and powerful solution we have a competitive advantage on the market and we can better respond to industrial needs. The future is bright for TopSolid’Cam and its more than 1000 users across the globe.

Missler Software launches TopSolid’Cam 7, the 7th generation of its CAM software TopSolid’Cam. The...

Missler Software launches TopSolid’Cam 7, the 7th generation of its CAM software TopSolid’Cam. The French CAM/CAM developer released TopSolid’Design 7 2 years ago and now completes its integrated CAD/CAM solution with the release of TopSolid’Cam 7.
Comletely based on new software technology TopSolid 7 offers huge innovations on the CAD/CAM market. TopSolid 7 has been entirely re-thought and rewritten both in terms of software technology and methodology.
TopSolid’Cam 7’s revolutionary interface and exceptional performances will allow its users to machine faster and more accurately.

Program milling and turning machines with TopSolid’Cam 7

TopSolid’Cam 7 is already used by approximately 50 customers since the release of the 7.5 version in 2011. TopSolid’Cam 7.6, which has been released this month, offers continuous 5 axis functions and the possibility to program MillTurn machines, in particular turning machines.
The complete CAD/CAM integration offered by Missler Software is a major differentiating point between TopSolid and other CAD/CAM software packages on the market. This complete and transparent integration of a CAD and CAM solution is, and already was (with TopSolid v6) and will continue to be (with TopSolid 7) the unique strong and most original and key selling point of TopSolid.
The French software developer intends on showing its dedication to the production market with the release of TopSolid’Cam 7. According to Christian Arber, Missler Software CEO “TopSolid is above all an integrated CAD/CAM solution for companies that wish to produce and manufacture what they have designed. TopSolid has been developed to use and take advantage of design and machining know-how from the 3D model right up to machine programming. »

CAM leader in France and across the globe

TopSolid’Cam is today one of the leading CAM solutions used by manufacturers and sub-contractors in France. One may ask why Missler Software has developed a 7th generation CAM solution. According to Jean-Pierre Lugarini, CAM development Director at Missler Software « All software developers need to continually rethink and create new solutions so that its customers avail of the most up-to-date technology. We all benefit from such development, especially our customers.”

Strong features of TopSolid’Cam 7

Only CAM software to be completely rewritten and to have adopted a native Windows 7 ergonomy (modern, intuitive and very powerful interface).

Only CAM software to manage files, machine tools, cutting tools and ISO files with an integrated and transparent PDM.

Machining of the designed part without worrying about tolerances or data re-entry thanks to the new FreeShape function. (In mechanical engineering the machined part is often very different to the nominal part).

Without forgetting the key functions already proposed in version 6 of TopSolid’Cam

Stock management for all milling and turning operations.

Strong CAD integration and use of features to enable part redesign for ultimate machining.

Save and reuse company know-how.

Advanced simulation of lathes/milling machines.

Creation of operating files which manage tracking system needs for sub-contractors.

About TopSolid 7

Completely based on new software development technology, TopSolid 7 responds to the increasingly complex industry needs. TopSolid 7 is in fact the result of 6 years of intense development which has permitted the integration of such technological advances as MultiCore, PDM, web compatibility, software components and computer-generated images. The first TopSolid 7 clients in the mechanical engineering field have experienced time gains in the region of 20 to 30%. Missler Software wishes to keep an excellent compatibility and between the TopSolid versions 6 and 7. In this way our customers benefit from a whole new technology while keeping all know-how they have built up with version 6

Improved design performance with TopSolid’Design 7.6

Missler Software will launch the latest version of TopSolid’Design over the coming month. This new...

Missler Software will launch the latest version of TopSolid’Design over the coming month. This new version is called TopSolid’Design 7.6. The 7th generation of TopSolid offers huge innovations on the CAD/CAM market by simplifying the design and modification of large assemblies in an organised and structured environment. The end user of the new software generation benefits from productivity gains estimated at being 30% superior to traditional solutions.
Missler Software is a software developer that takes into account manufacturing imperatives throughout the entire product development lifecycle and does not only worry about managing the CAD definition of the part. The French software developer’s philosophy of offering a complete solution right up to and including the actual programming of the machine tool means that manufacturing considerations are taken into account in the CAD stage. FreeShape is a new function in TopSolid 7 which ensures that the correct tolerances are applied to parts designed using TopSolid but it can also manage tolerances for imported parts designed using another CAD software. FreeShape is one of TopSolid’Design’s key functions.
Another groundbreaking function in TopSolid 7 is its completely integrated and transparent PDM. All data management actions are carried out directly in TopSolid (rename, move, copy/paste, …) and data is shared and secured transparently (guaranteed data integrity, PDM messenger, …)
Let’s take a look at some of the major improvements in the 7.6 version.

3D part creation wizard

This new function allows you to rebuild 3D parts from imported 2D files, notably DXF drafts. The new 3D part creation wizards enable you to quickly and automatically create 3D parts.
Today’s Methods Department often has to completely redesign parts which will be manufactured. This obviously leads to huge time losses and repeat data entry. With the new 3D part creation wizard Missler Software tries to make the rebuilding of parts as painless as possible. Time savings in the region of 30 to 50% have been observed in manufacturing and sub-contracting sites thanks to the new 3D wizard. This new function is a clear example of Missler Software’s manufacturing considerations being developed in its CAD application.

Drilling extraction

FreeShape is a new concept in TopSolid’Design 7 which means that users do not need a history tree to edit imported parts. In the 7.6 version Missler Software has further improved this function with the possibility of extracting drillings from imported parts. TopSolid’Design detects and automatically recreates drilling operations thereby allowing the user to easily change and manage the drilling position for each operation. Again we can see Missler Software’s manufacturing objectives behind this new function.

Excel link

With TopSolid’Design 7.6 you can drive your design directly from an Excel document. One of the advantages of entering parameters in an Excel spreadsheet which is external to TopSolid is that staff members that do not use TopSolid’Design or are not equipped with TopSolid’Design can enter dimensions directly at the customer site (for example a steel frame manufacturer who goes on site directly to measure sizes and dimensions) Once the Excel spreadsheet is filled in a simple connection to TopSolid’Design will update the CAD designs, BOMs and associated drawings.

More complete draft creation

Missler Software understands the importance of having complete and detailed 2D drawings and does not consider that 2D drafts are something of the past in today‘s 3D world. We all know that contracts are still signed based on 2D drawings.
Today’s manufacturing companies still need to make impressive 2D draft documents which are complete and meet industry standards without having to use an external 2D application. For this reason improved draft creation is one of the key improvements in TopSolid 7.6. Let’s take a look at just 3 of the improvements in TopSolid’Design’s draft functions:

Create and include 2D components and customizable symbols (to fully complete your draft documents)

Drilling tables (which show the position of each hole, the type of hole to make, etc.)

Revision index tables and difference notes (to manage product life cycles)

You no longer need an external solution to create impressive 2D draft documents.

TopSolid’Mold tops mold software rankings

A recent study conducted by Missler Software on the leading CAD/CAM solutions for the mold industry...

A recent study conducted by Missler Software on the leading CAD/CAM solutions for the mold industry on offer today has confirmed the continued strength of its TopSolid’Mold solution. TopSolid’Mold is an integrated CAD/CAM solution for the design of molds and the machining of tools for mold makers and progressive die makers. According to R&D teams at Missler Software “To be efficient a CAD mold making solution should propose increased automation for repetitive mold design operations. In order to manage all projects the CAD software should ideally be completely integrated with a CAD/CAM solution that can manage all complex freeform shapes, general mechanical engineering and machining operations in a parametric and associative way. Thanks to these qualities TopSolid’Mold has become a worldwide reference in the design and manufacture of molds.”
TopSolid’Mold manages the design of core cavity blocks, mold assembly, the machining of the mold base, milling mold cavities, electrode production. Here are just some of the solution’s strong points:
Import and repair tools: Importing external data is a key step in the design of any tool. TopSolid can directly exploit the following formats: Parasolid, IGES, Catia v4 & v5, Pro-E, UG, STEP, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, ACIS, DXF, DWG, STL and VDA. In addition to its data recovery capacities TopSolid has intelligent correction tools to isolate and repair geometrical problems often associated with imported external data. (fill holes, clean geometries, adjust continuity, …). In order to speed up the process of preparing the design before starting the mold design TopSolid’Mold provides tools to analyze the plastic part, and select appropriate molding strategies quickly (draft angles, undercuts, wall thicknesses)
Specialized functions for mold makers: Contrary to many generic design applications, TopSolid’Mold has functions to create parting lines and surfaces, wizards to position standard components plus its fully integrated and associative 2D drafting function which help to rationalize the design process of tools, while taking manufacturing imperatives into consideration.

TopSolid’Mold provides a complete set of features to split core & cavity block

TopSolid’Mold provides intelligent tools to extract inserts from molding blocks, and prepare all movements required to unmold the part. Such tools and wizards reduce human errors by using automatic features to detect insert areas and remove associated material.

Capitalize company know-how: All mold makers know that to be efficient they need to preserve their company know-how and standardize their design process to optimize production. TopSolid’Mold allows companies to use and adapt standard mold bases (HASCO, Meusburger, Futaba, Misumi, Rabourdin…). In addition, TopSolid’Mold’s smart 3D standard components enables moldmakers store their manufacturing process in TopSolid’Mold standard components thereby reducing human error as the components generate automatically their own operations.
Collaborative design tools: TopSolid’Mold enables companies assign several designers to the same mold design by sharing the workload in order to reduce the length of the design cycles. A first user can complete the design of a movement while another one is making cooling circuits, making operations in the same plate! TopSolid can also manage the conflicts resulting from changes that are made simultaneously to the same part or subassembly. The effective control of desynchronization also allows remote users to work on the same project.
Design electrodes: Once the 3D tool design process is complete, it is often necessary to design and build dozens of electrodes which can become a repetitive and painstaking process. In addition to efficiently designing electrodes, TopSolid’Electrode also guarantees that they are compatible with all the specific characteristics resulting from EDM machining. TopSolid'Electrode is fully associative with TopSolid’Mold. It provides several strategies to create the 3D model of the electrode and produce associated documents.
Associated machining: Parts designed in 3D can be machined directly using the TopSolid’Cam and TopSolid’Wire CAM modules, without necessarily having to re-enter the geometry data in the workshop, or generating a 2D draft in the Manufacturing Methods Department. TopSolid’Cam automatically detects and machines hole features and tolerances coming from the 3D design. Using an associative link TopSolid’Cam automatically updates tool path when the design changes.

Isogeometric technologies to enhance design and production integration

SINTEF, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, hosted the kick-off meeting...

SINTEF, the largest independent research organization in Scandinavia, hosted the kick-off meeting of the TERRIFIC collaborative R&D project in Oslo from October 12th to 14th. The TERRIFIC project, a 3 year European project, is devoted to a significant improvement of computational tools for the design, analysis, optimization, manufacturing and long-term storage of products with functional free-form surfaces (
).
TERRIFIC uses an isogeometric approach in selected application areas. The industrial partners in the research program range from SMEs to global players. In all these areas, the functionality depends on the shape of the product surfaces, and even small variations in the manufactured shape may have significant impact on the performance. Computer Aided Design and numerical simulation algorithms are vital technologies in modern product development, yet they are today far from being seamlessly integrated. Their interoperability is severely disturbed by inconsistencies in the mathematical approaches used.
The concept of "The Isogeometric Model" combines the shape representation accuracy of CAD with the topological qualities of FEA, providing an accurate and watertight model for product shape representation. The TERRIFIC project will provide key tangible evidence for the adoption of "The Isogeometric Model" in industrial contexts through validated real-life test cases and investigation of other relevant questions essential for the practical use of the concept. As "The Isogeometric Model" is not coherent with respect to current approaches, TERRIFIC will address the following related issues:

The Isogeometric Model for geometry-based simulation and design optimization, for the example of dip painting of car bodies and frames

Isogeometric Analysis for improved accuracy in simulation, with examples in railway technology and for typical aircraft parts

The Isogeometric Model and computer-aided machining

Life-cycle aspects of The Isogeometric Model and relations to standards

From the CAD-model to The Isogeometric Model, and vice versa

TERRIFIC is a 3-year project which will also contribute to the creation of an isogeometric toolkit (based on software from INRIA, SINTEF, UNIKL and JOTNE) in order to:

Provide unified tools for other activities in the project

Coordinate shared software between activities in the project

Provide a fully documented isogeometric toolkit version for future use by the project partners

Build a free software isogeometric toolkit (GNU GPL) version to be generally released after the TERRIFIC project terminates

The project also aims at significant improvement of the interoperability of computational tools for the design, analysis and optimization of functional products.
The partners in the project together with the coordinator SINTEF (Norway) are the following industrial partners: Alenia (Italy), ECS (Austria), Jotne (Norway), Missler Software/TopSolid (France), Siemens (Germany), and Academic partners, INRIA (France), Johannes Kepler Universität Linz (Austria), Technische Universität Kaiserslautern (Germany), Università di Pavia Italy (Italy).
Acknowledgement:
TERRIFIC is part of the EU "Factories of the Future" initiative which is a € 1.2 billion public private partnership in which the European Commission and industry will jointly support the development of new enabling technologies for EU manufacturing which have cross-sectoral benefits and contribute to greener production. Achieving continued growth and sustainability depends on a long-term shift from cost-based competitive advantage to an approach based on high value added. In addition, the TERRIFIC project is connected to the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) program.

Missler Software and 3 of its leading German speaking VARs (Value Added Resellers) recently...

Missler Software and 3 of its leading German speaking VARs (Value Added Resellers) recently participated at EMO, the leading international trade fair for the machine tool industry, which took place in Hannover, Germany from 19-24 September. Staged under the motto of "Machine Tools & More", the six-day event in Hannover featured the latest machinery, solutions and services for every conceivable aspect of metalworking - a veritable tour de force by some 2,037 exhibitors from 41 different countries.

The 2011 event has been recognized as a success by both exhibitors, organizers and visitors. For Missler Software and its resellers this has certainly been the case. The 75m² booth was bustling for the 6 days which is a reflection of the current success of TopSolid in Germany and the neighboring German speaking countries (otherwise known as the DACH market). In 2010 the DACH market turnover increased by 25% becoming the 1st market for TopSolid outside of France. In fact turnover in the DACH market has increased fivefold over the past 10 years.

The EMO trade fair also give Missler Software to opportunity to host a press conference for the German speaking press. The presence of all the relevant industrial journalists at the TopSolid press conference contributed to the success of the event. Sales figures, customer references, local VAR information as well as specific strategic company information was revealed to the local press. Missler Software was also very proud to invite a spokesperson from WFL, the well-known Austrian machine-tool manufacture, to speak about the successful partnership between the 2 companies. WFL and Missler Software have been working together for many peoples to provide a reliable CAD/CAM solution with high-performance post-processors which have been tested and validated by WFL.
